When the sights and sounds of the holiday season come rushing in, a Christmas Simmer Pot adds a cozy aroma to the atmosphere. Think of it as a bubbling stovetop potpourri. Simply put your ingredients in a pot of water and bring it to a simmer. You can also opt for using your Crock Pot, fill with water, add your favorite ingredients, turn on high until heated through, remove lid and turn down to the low setting for the duration. You’ll need to keep an eye on both methods and add water as needed throughout the day.

Mix and match to create your favorite holiday fragrance:

Cranberries – Fresh or dehydrated, adds the pop of Christmas Red & a light fruity scent.

Orange Slices – Fresh or dehydrated, adds bright color & citrusy scent, pairs well with warm spices.

Lemon Slices – Fresh or dehydrated, adds bright color & fresh clean scent.

Vanilla Bean or Extract – Adds a smooth & sweet undertone to balance spices.

Cinnamon Sticks – A classic holiday scent, warm & sweet.

Star Anise – These star shaped pods are visually striking & smell like black licorice.

Clove – These tiny but mighty spices pack a punch with their rich, spicy aroma.

Allspice – These berries combine the favorite fall scents to add some warmth.

Rosemary or Thyme – These herbs add an earthy fragrance & pair well with citrus and spices.

Pine or Cedar Sprigs – This fresh woodsy scent brings the outside in.

Christmas Simmer Pots Make Great Gifts

Budget Friendly: The ingredients are affordable and in season, making it a great option for spreading holiday cheer without breaking the bank.

Personalize: Choose from the popular ingredients listed above to customize this gift to the recipient’s preference.

Practical: Mass produced items can end up sitting on a shelf collecting dust or, dare I say, are regifted. A Simmer Pot is a nice option because it’s meant to be enjoyed within the season.

Creating the gift is easy, gather the ingredients and add them to a jar or clear cellophane bag and add a ribbon. If you want to amp up your gift and give the Christmas Simmer Pot as an add on, this is the Dutch Oven I have and this glass pot is on my wish list.

A Christmas Simmer Pot is a simple and delightful way to fill your home with the scents of the season. Whether you make one for yourself or gift it to others, it’s a nice addition for gatherings or cozy nights in with your favorite Christmas Movie.

My long time and close friend, Linni, writes Hiding Hope with her heart on her sleeve about her faith through infertility, miscarriages and miracle babies. I have walked through much of this with her in real life but still found it hard to put the book down, even though I know how the story ends. The book is written in bite sized chapters making it a quick read. It’s full of meaningful stories about her journey of holding death and life in her hands and coming out wiser, with a different definition of strength on the other side. She bravely shares it all, the beautiful and inspiring as well as the raw and messy.

Although you’ll find this book under the Religion genre on Amazon, and the key players are hope and faith, this is not your typical Christian book. It’s not a self-help book that teaches you how to get from Point A to Point B unscathed. It doesn’t list scriptures to quote for your circumstances or answer the question of how many Hail Mary’s to pray. Nor does it include breathing exercises for anxiety. While these can be helpful tools in moments when we don’t know what else to do, they can turn into band aids that allow you to stay on the surface, just keeping your head above water instead of taking the time to dive down and do the deep work of healing. This sometimes requires either being quietly tucked away with cleansing tears for no one else to see or talking with trusted loved ones or paid professionals. The truth is, in order to thrive, the deep work has to be done. In Hiding Hope you see Linni’s resilience, as she wrestles with God’s promises while facing disappointments until finding peace in spite of her circumstances.

My Takeaways:

Our words matter, compassion is key.

We can hold hope in one hand and grief in the other.

When we go through the ups and downs of life, it is important who we keep in our corner.

As the reader, you’ll start as an innocent bystander but likely get emotional over her story, possibly even finding yourself in tears about a part of your own. Be prepared to be gently walked right into your own healing. No two journeys are the same, but Linni’s willingness to be vulnerable helps us see ourselves and God in a new compassionate light.

Visit linniweishaar.com to learn more about the author.

* Fun fact: Find me starting on page 5!

10 Common Homeopathic Remedies and How to Use Them

Homeopathy is a natural healing system that has been around for over 200 years. It uses highly diluted substances to stimulate the body’s self-healing process. Among the hundreds of remedies available, some are widely used for common ailments. Here are ten homeopathic remedies, all recommended in a 30C potency for at home use.

1. Arnica Montana (For Injuries and Bruising)

Arnica is the go-to remedy for physical trauma, bruises, and muscle soreness. It helps reduce swelling and speeds up healing after falls, surgeries, or intense workouts. It’s best taken immediately after an injury, with a dose every few hours until improvement is noticed.

2. Aconitum Napellus (For Sudden Illness and Shock)

Aconite is ideal for conditions that come on suddenly, such as high fevers, colds, or panic attacks—especially after exposure to cold wind. It is also helpful for anxiety or shock following a traumatic event. A dose can be taken at the onset of symptoms and repeated as needed.

3. Belladonna (For Fever and Inflammation)

Belladonna is commonly used for sudden high fevers, throbbing headaches, and inflammation with a red, hot sensation. It is particularly effective when symptoms come on rapidly. A dose can be taken every few hours during acute illness.

4. Bryonia (For Dry Coughs and Stiff Joints)

Bryonia is useful for dry, painful coughs and body aches that worsen with movement. It is also recommended for headaches and flu-like symptoms where the person prefers to remain still. Take one dose every few hours until improvement is seen.

5. Carbo Vegetabilis (For Bloating and Weakness)

Known as the “corpse reviver,” Carbo Veg is used for extreme fatigue, faintness, and bloating, particularly after rich or fatty meals. It is also useful in cases of gas, belching, and indigestion. Take a dose as needed for digestive discomfort.

6. Chamomilla (For Teething and Irritability)

Chamomilla is best for children experiencing teething pain or anyone feeling extremely irritable and sensitive to pain. A dose can be given every few hours until symptoms ease.

7. Gelsemium (For Flu and Weakness)

Gelsemium is great for flu with exhaustion, muscle weakness, chills, and headaches. It is particularly suited for people who feel heavy, drowsy, and lethargic. Take a dose every few hours during illness.

8. Hypericum (For Nerve Pain and Injuries)

Hypericum is the go-to remedy for nerve pain, especially injuries to fingers, toes, or the spine. It is also helpful for sharp, shooting pains after surgery or dental work. Take one dose every few hours as needed.

9. Ignatia Amara (For Grief and Emotional Stress)

Ignatia is a key remedy for emotional distress, grief, and anxiety, especially when symptoms include sighing, mood swings, and a lump-in-the-throat sensation. Take one dose as needed during emotional upset.

10. Nux Vomica (For Digestion and Hangovers)

Nux Vomica is perfect for digestive issues, especially after overeating, consuming too much alcohol, or experiencing stress-induced stomach troubles. It helps with nausea, bloating, and heartburn. Take one dose at bedtime and another in the morning if needed.

11. Lycopodium Clavatum (For Bloating and Confidence Issues)

Lycopodium is a great remedy for bloating, gas, and digestive issues, especially when symptoms worsen later in the day. It also helps with stage fright, performance anxiety, and lack of self-confidence. Take a dose before stressful events or when symptoms arise.

12. Alumina (For Constipation and Dryness)

Alumina is used for chronic constipation, particularly when there is little or no urge to pass stool. It’s also helpful for extreme dryness of skin and mucous membranes. Take one dose daily for ongoing issues or every few hours for acute symptoms.

How to Take Homeopathic Remedies

Homeopathic remedies should be taken on a clean palate, avoid eating or drinking 15 minutes before and after. Let the pellets dissolve under the tongue. Start with one dose and repeat only if symptoms persist. If no improvement is seen after a few doses, a different remedy may be needed.

These ten homeopathic remedies are a great start to a homeopathy kit, offering natural relief for a wide range of common ailments.

I started Oasis of Rest in 2018. Once a month, I take a Sunday morning and try to get my house squeaky clean and then from 12- 4, I open the door for women to hang out and rest.

Here’s Why I Do It

People are so busy, ALL the time! And women, good grief, it’s rare to see white space in their calendar. Even when there’s nothing on their schedule, there is always much to be done. Cleaning, cooking, laundry etc.

I find that it can be hard to relax in your own home. Even though your body might slow down, the mind sees everything that still needs to be done. So you might have on comfy clothes and a cozy blanket and even a hot cup of your favorite beverage but when you look around, there’s that one thing you haven’t dusted in a while or that load of laundry sitting in the dryer that needs to be folded. My goal is to create a space for the brain and body to rest.

Here’s What I Do

My house has cozy blankets, warm beverages and the most important thing NOTHING FOR YOU TO DO. You can check your phone at the door if you don’t want all the dinging noises or to see that thing lighting up here and there.

I try to keep it very simple for myself and my guests. I’ll throw the grilled cheese maker on the counter with a couple of loafs of bread and a few kinds of cheese. Then put out some chips and pickles. I have coffee, tea and water available and when I’m feeling spunky, some sort of seasonal beverage. I like to have fresh flowers on the table and my house usually smells like baked goods because, well… She Bakes They Eat. Defaulting to one of my ‘go to’ and very easy recipes that every one loves, like these Chocolate Chip Cookies, ensures I have no added pressure on top of having my house ship shape without a bunch of dishes in the sink.

There are a few other things I like to have readily available. I try to have a seasonal magazine or two, put my nail polish out and have a girlie movie at the ready. I don’t plan on entertaining, but if you want to chat me up, I’m down. Other than visiting with me or others who make an appearance, I’ve had someone knit, use my spare room to prepare their application for a Ted Talk and nap on my couch. It makes my heart happy to see people rest in general, but for someone to feel comfortable enough in my home to fall asleep, well that’s just the icing on the cake.

I’d love to have you join me at my next Oasis of Rest!

My home detoxing journey started years ago with one small change because I have an extremely sensitive nose. I remember being in the bathtub and smelling the residual of the chemicals I used to clean the tub earlier that day. The thought that I might literally be taking a bath in chemical soup disturbed me greatly. I immediately got out of the tub and got online to purchase an all natural cleaner. For a long time, that was the only effort I made, until last year. Last year a friend showed me a documentary about all the chemicals in our home and some issues they cause and it lit a fire! I wanted to pass along 3 tips to detox your home that I’ve been using, to help you get started if this is something you’ve been thinking about. Be warned though: if you decide to take a step on this journey, the more you know, the more you’ll notice.

Before I really started digging in to what this all meant, I did the trending thing and got sucked into one of those websites that carry products that say “natural” on the label. I was so excited when they arrived at my door! I unpacked the natural hand soaps that smelled like flowers and diluted the new cleaners in glass bottles with pride. I was almost skipping around my house, replacing things and feeling good Until I learned that when you see natural on a product label, that’s not exactly what it means.

Since then, I’ve taken a closer look at the products I was using in my home. We have an overwhelming amount of choices at the store. Aisles and aisles of beautifully packaged products with intoxicating smells to draw us in and beckon us to purchase. I’ve listed below 3 tactics I’ve adopted to help detox my home and narrow things down:

Read the label. Flip that beautiful container over and ask yourself… what happens if I this product is ingested? If it says anything other than flush with water, I’m out. If it passes this test, I move on to one of the options below. (If it says, call poison control, throw the bottle and run for the hills.)

The website ewg.org lets you put in the name of a product and it gives you the toxicity rating. There is also an app called Think Dirty. I like this option because it’s nice to have at hand when you’re out and about.

Replace one thing at a time. As you start to run out of a product, do your research to find a better replacement. This will help you skip the overwhelm.

Keep in mind that with everything in life, pick your battles. Seriously. I like to live by the 80/20 rule with most things because it saves my sanity. I’ve chosen mine, my skincare isn’t going anywhere and I don’t see myself letting go of the wrinkle spray for my clothes. This process can feel overwhelming. Honestly, the more you dig, the more you’ll find you want to change what you wear, what you eat. So I encourage you to start with baby steps here, friends. One thing at a time or maybe just one thing. You can be sure I’ll be over here applauding your efforts. You’ll notice that I’ve made a big effort here on not mentioning any product names, but if you’re looking for suggestions, please feel free to reach out, I’m happy to make a recommendation.

We can’t fix everything but we can choose one or two things to start and gradually make more changes. I feel much better making these efforts and it has been worth it. And by worth it, I mean my budget has thanked me, this cuts down my cleaning expenses, A LOT! My mind doesn’t even have to be bothered with the overwhelming choices and the marketing of the next new best thing. It’s a relief to skip those aisles of overwhelming choices and my mind can shut out the marketing noise of the next new best thing. I’m very much a work in progress here but I’m marking items off the list. I still need to find something to clean my wood floors if you have any suggestions.
