So you’re thinking about starting a blog, how exciting! You want to own a patch of grass on the world wide web. That’s exactly what I suggest, owning it. If you use a free site for your blog, there are a few downfalls. You don’t fully own your data and you’ll be limited with space and control. Whether you plan on blogging as a hobby or as a business, I highly recommend WordPress, 34% of the internet runs on it. I’ve listed 5 steps below on how to start a blog.
Step 1. Choose a Topic
When thinking about what you want to blog about. Think about what you find interesting, particularly what you’ve found interesting for a while. When you’re excited about something, it’s easy to write about.
Step 2. Pick a Name
When picking a blog name, give yourself some room for creativity but keep it simple. When someone visits your blog, you want them to quickly pick up on what the blog is about. Keep in mind you will need to make sure the Domain Name (web address) is available before you get too settled on a name. You can do a quick search for a .com at GoDaddy. I also suggest making sure the social media handles are available so your name can be the same across the board. Namecheckr.com is a great resource for checking username availability across multiple social platforms.
Step 3. Sign up for a Web Host
I highly recommend BlueHost. If you’re just getting started you can get by with their basic plan. You do have to sign up for a year at a time. There’s so much to learn about blogging that I think after a year, you’ll know if you want to keep going. You can get a year of hosting with your domain included for under $100. Their customer service team is VERY helpful!
Step 4. Install WordPress
BlueHost makes installing WordPress so easy with one click of a button. You can find most everything you need to start working with WordPress.org on wpbeginner. I was so happy when I stumbled across their site when I got started. I think things would have taken me much longer without wpbeginner.
Step 5 Choose a Theme, Customize & Write
There are lots of free themes available. Here are a few to give you an idea. Once you’ve got your theme picked out, you can customize with the help of wpbeginner and get moving along pretty quickly.
I hope this post helps you get an idea of how to start a blog. I’m happy to suggest courses based on your needs or if you are looking for one on one help, shoot me an email hello@shebakestheyeat.com and we can chat.
Good luck and happy blogging!
